Is your dog lunging, being reactive, barking excessively, or showing signs of separation anxiety?

Sophia is a qualified dog and cat trainer offering in-home consultations available across Randwick, Coogee, Waverley, Queens Park, and Bondi Junction.

Sophia is an unbelievably great dog behaviourist and we would highly recommend anyone trust their fur-babies with her.

We were referred to Sophia by a friend and were instantly impressed. Whether it was puppy training or dog walking/lead training to late night emergencies to save Bunny from imminent disaster Sophia was there.

Sophia quickly became his favourite! Cannot recommend highly enough for someone with a young pup who needs a bit of training to iron out those hard-to-beat behaviours (think jumping up on people, demand barking etc).

Our two cavoodles listened so hard and in just one session learned enough to more and more relax, especially because she also trained us on how to help them understand what we want

Sophia helped us manage our reactive rescue dog at a particularly difficult time in his development. Since that difficult period, timely behaviour training, and the implementation of Sophia’s strategies, we’ve been able to manage with Bailey.

I sought Sophia’s help with my puppy, Cooper that barked at everyone and every dogs we met during the walk and she has been a great support to us ever since. She helped me to understand Cooper’s behaviours, provided me with practical steps to lessen Cooper’s anxiety, and guided me to implement those steps correctly.

What does Sophia the dog behaviourist do?

A dog behaviourist is a professional who focuses on solving behavioural problems in dogs. Unlike dog trainers who teach commands, behaviourists find the root cause of issues like anxiety or aggression. They assess a dog’s temperament and environment to create personalised behaviour plans.

A dog behaviourist can address a wide range of behavioural issues.

Common dog behaviour issues in the Eastern Suburbs include:

  • excessive barking
  • reactive behaviour
  • pulling on the lead
  • stubborn walkers
  • separation anxiety
  • agressive behaviour
  • resource guarding
  • poor recall
  • destructive behaviour

From the very get go, Sophia believes success begins with the very first interaction with her clients and their dogs—oftentimes, even before meeting in-person. Her professional experience and qualifications as a vet nurse gives her the unique advantage of being able to help answer a broader list of questions pertaining to the care of a dog or a cat. And this is why so many dog owners from around Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs call on Sophia.

An at-home consultation is a hands-on, detailed approach to tackling behavioural problems, as it allows the behaviourist to see the dog’s behaviour in context and provide practical, tailored advice.

One-on-one consults with Sophia range from 45 to 90 minutes, ideally across multiple sessions.

Sofia has a natural love for dogs, often bringing her own pup to class.
When training, she is firm, but friendly and makes an effort to get to know each of the pups and their owners.

Sophia is a magician! She helped us immensely with our English bulldog. We experienced a lot of behavioural issues with our bulldog bulldog, as she hadn’t had much stability prior to us. We had 3 sessions with Sophia and they made such a huge difference – we are still seeing the benefits.

Common problematic dog behaviours

Lead pulling, barking, and reactivity are the most common behaviours new dog parents are concerned with in the area—let’s dive into what they are.

Pulling on the lead

Lead pulling is when a dog tugs or pulls hard on its leash while walking, instead of walking calmly beside you. This is considered undesired behaviour because it can make walks uncomfortable, difficult to control, and dangerous if the dog is strong or running towards something.

A dog behaviourist helps by teaching both the dog and the owner how to walk calmly on a leash without pulling.

Excessive barking

Excessive barking refers to barking that occurs more frequently or for longer durations than is typical or necessary.

Common reasons for excessive barking in dogs include:

  • Attention-seeking
  • Boredom or frustration
  • Territorial or protective instinct
  • Anxiety or fear
  • Excitement
  • Health issues

A dog behaviourist seeks to understand why a dog barks excessively and put measures in place to address the cause(s).

Reactivity (over-reacts)

When a dog shows signs of reactivity, it means the dog overreacts to certain things in its environment, like other dogs, people, or noises (eg, birds, car exhaust).

Reactivity can be expressed in barking, lunging, growling, or running away when they see or hear something that triggers them.

A dog with reactivity often needs help learning how to stay calm and relaxed in triggering situations and this is where a dog behaviourist can help.
